Frenzy Surrounds Ariz. Shooting Suspect's Hearing

PHOENIX (AP) — Throngs of reporters could not wait to get their first look at the mysterious man accused of a deadly shooting rampage that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords critically wounded.

When Loughner walked into a Phoenix courtroom Monday with a gash on his temple, everything fell silent.

The judge told the 22-year-old he could face life imprisonment or the death penalty for the killings of U.S. District Judge John Roll and a Giffords' staffer, and the shooting of Giffords, who was injured.

Loughner faces another 20 years for the shooting of two other Giffords staffers, who survived. Four others also died and more were wounded; Loughner will be charged with those crimes in state courts.
