Christie Scales Green Plan Back From 'Pie in Sky'

Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey plans to rein in the state’s renewable energy ambitions to what he called a “responsible and achievable” target for the next decade, The New York Times reports.

Chris Christie, energy, green, New JerseyChristie, who recently pulled New Jersey out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a multi-state cap-and-trade exchange for emissions, now wants to lower the amount of electricity generated through solar, wind, and other green technologies to 22.5 percent by 2021.

Christie described the 30 percent target in New Jersey’s 10-year master plan for energy as “a pie-in-the-sky number.” On Tuesday, he proposed a “basket of options,” including renewables, nuclear power, and energy efficiency to provide power cleanly and economically.

New Jersey has some of the country’s highest electricity rates, he said.

The revised plan will go to public hearings before it becomes official. Some environmentalists and regulators are criticizing the proposed changes as another retreat, coupled with Christie’s exit from the regional emissions pact.

But a representative of the state’s Chamber of Commerce praised the rewrite as a diverse and “business-friendly” plan.
