Republican lawmakers have been brainwashed by Democrats into believing they may be racist in their views on immigration reform — but it's actually Democrats who are racist, Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt says.
"It has always struck me as being particularly nasty and cynical the way, no matter what position conservatives take out, the most common refrain we hear from Democrats is to accuse them of being racist," Hurt told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"This, more than anything, has foiled Republicans in their effort to be serious about immigration reform, because they actually fall into this caricature that Democrats make of them and they start thinking, well, maybe we do sound racist," he said Wednesday.

"I would argue that the Democrat position is the one that's actually racist because they keep pandering to immigrants and illegal immigrants as if the only thing that they care about is being granted amnesty for their crimes and being given welfare and being given free medical care."
That's a completely false picture, says Hurt, whose latest column
in The Washington Times is titled, "Close Down the Democratic Minstrel Show on Immigration."
"The truth of the matter is . . . they come here and they're actually looking to work and they're actually looking to do things. They want to be, notwithstanding the fact they've broken the law by coming here, otherwise lawful citizens," Hurt said.
"So, Republicans should just reject this caricature that Democrats have that all these illegals . . . aspire to do is be sort of deadbeat criminals.
"They should appeal to their greater senses and say, 'look, we believe in low taxes, we believe in the value of work, we believe in granting the American Dream to people who come here legally, but you have to do it legally.'"
