The mother of a 3-year-old thrown to his death from a 52-story New York City apartment building says the father killed the child out of spite.

Svetlana Kanarikov says in a statement that she had been nervous about the boy's visits with his dad, and she initially wanted them to be supervised. But she relented after a Dec. 5 court appearance.

Police say the husband, Dmitriy, plunged to his death after he threw his son off the rooftop Sunday, shortly before he was supposed to turn the child over to his estranged wife. It was his first unsupervised visit with his son.

According to her statement, the wife says her husband threatened to take their son if she didn't leave everything to him in the separation.

She says she's heartbroken.
