Facebook Inc., owner of the world’s most popular social-networking service, started a foundation to support its Open Compute initiative, which seeks to encourage sharing of technology for data centers.

The foundation was formed about three weeks ago and its directors include executives from Intel Corp., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Rackspace Hosting Inc., said Frank Frankovsky, director of hardware design at Facebook, at an event in New York broadcast over the Web. The company unveiled the Open Compute effort in April as a way to ease access to technology that cuts energy use in data centers.

“This is about community,” Frankovsky said. “The best way to make ideas better is to share the ideas, share all of our best practices.” The foundation is “well-funded,” he said.

Facebook relies on data centers to store and dish up photos, status updates and videos to its more than 800 million users. By improving regulation of computer workloads, power consumption and cooling, the Palo Alto, California-based company says data centers can have less impact on the environment while cutting costs for companies.
