General: US Soldiers to be Spread Thinner

Monday, 12 Sep 2011 08:28 PM

F0RT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — The new commander in charge of training and providing Army soldiers for the wars says troops heading to Afghanistan as the war winds down will be spread thinner and must be ready to perform a wider array of missions.

Gen. David Rodriguez, who took over as head of U.S. Army Forces Command on Monday, tells The Associated Press that as troops withdraw from Afghanistan, one brigade may have to take over where two have been working. And they must be trained to coordinate and use the high-tech surveillance, communications, and command and control systems that are flooding into the war zone.

Rodriguez says the Army can't afford to tailor forces for specific types of combat so they will have to be trained to adapt to any enemy, anywhere.
