Nearly 75 percent of Americans now believe that women should be allowed to serve in combat units alongside men. Support for women in combat was nearly identical among women and men, with 73 percent of women and 72 percent of men supporting the move, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll showed.

Women make up about 14.5 percent of active-duty service members. The Pentagon, since 1994, has barred them from serving in any unit whose main mission is ground combat.

The policy is currently under review and a commission set up by Congress recently recommended an end to the ban, the Post said.
