"The Young and the Restless" star Melody Thomas Scott sat down with TVGuide.com this week to discuss her ruthlessly successful long-running character on the soap opera and her upcoming guest appearance in the David E. Kelley Fox sitcom "The Crazy Ones."

The 57-year-old Scott plays the hard-luck heroine Nikki Newman on "The Young and the Restless," who according to TVGuide.com has "killed three people, married 11 times, battled pills and booze, worked as both a stripper and a hooker and even spread VD."

So why has Nikki Newman survived for so long on "The Young and the Restless"?

"Because she's driven purely by her emotions," Scott tells TVGuide.com. "One writing regime wanted to make her a senator, which was ludicrous. The viewers don't want to see Nikki be a feminist or take a job. They want to see her stay home and have personal problems and suffer like crazy. [Laughs] And they looove to see her drunk!"

When asked how she really felt about her character, Scott said, "Oh, I absolutely adore her but I wouldn't want to be her.

"It's so important for Nikki to be rich and glamorous. She's like one of those Real Housewives of wherever, those b—es who need to be the most beautiful and have the most money," Scott said. "I wouldn't even have lunch with her. But you know what? Nikki wouldn't want to have lunch with me, either. [Laughs] I would utterly bore her!"

In this year's upcoming season of "The Crazy Ones," which revolves around a Chicago advertising agency and stars Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar, Scott will play a librarian who has a drinking problem.

"It came completely out of the blue," Scott said in the interview. "I was originally called in for another role on the show and was told by the producers that I was too young, which was fabulous!

"But they thought Robin and I would play off each other well, so they created a role for me in a different episode," Scott added. "It's a great character and not at all glamorous like Nikki. This poor girl is really trying to be sexy but she's just not cutting it — and she has no qualms about pulling out her flask during library hours."

In other "The Young and the Restless" news, veteran soap actress Cady McClain of "As the World Turns" and "All My Children" fame, is replacing cast member Cynthia Watros in the character Kelly Andrews, TheWrap.com reported. McClain will reportedly debut on April 24, with Watros' last appearance being April 16.
