A viral photo of a wife carrying her former Marine husband who is a double amputee on her back is spreading a remarkable story of strength and love around the world.
Jesse Cottle stepped on an IED during an Afghanistan tour, losing both of his legs and facing months of physical therapy during recovery. On one of his first days out with new prosthetic legs, Jesse met Kelly, and the two fell in love. They celebrated their first wedding anniversary Aug. 18.

While visiting family, the couple told ABC News, a photographer snapped pictures of the two in the water, with Jesse on Kelly’s back
. Jesse told ABC that Kelly often carries him in the sand because it’s hard to walk on that surface with prosthetic legs.
When the studio, Shutter Happy Photography, posted the pic on Facebook
, it jumped to more than 7,000 likes and 1,000 shares.
In the ABC interview, Jesse said he wouldn’t change anything that’s happened to him, not even stepping on the IED because if he hadn’t faced that tragedy, he would never have met Kelly.
“His personality and who he is just outweighs his injuries by so much that you forget about it after a while,” Kelly told ABC.
In a comment on the story, Lynnie wrote, “Their song should be 'Look at Us' by Vince Gill. If you want to see what true love should be, look at us.”
Many took the opportunity to thank Jesse for his service in the Marines and to admire the attitude both bring to life.
Roger wrote, “That's a strong Marine, confident in having a picture with his wife carrying him. Strong woman, not just physically, but you can see it in her eyes too. They must be great together.”
