The reason behind Rupert Murdoch and wife of 14 years Wendi Deng's divorce is salacious, and the details could emerge soon, sources close to the couple told the Daily Mail.

Murdoch filed for divorce Thursday in a New York State Supreme Court. The filing said that the “relationship between husband and wife has broken down irretrievably.

No further details about the split have leaked yet, but some say that will soon change.

"The undisclosed reasons for Murdoch divorcing Deng are jaw-dropping," BBC financial correspondent Robert Peston, who is friends with some Murdoch staffers, wrote on his Twitter page.

Twitter has been brimming with speculation since the news broke of the 82-year-olds media tycoon's decision to separate from his third wife.

Michael Wolff, Murdoch's biographer, added fuel to the fire.

"I'm hearing the WHY, the big reveal, the scandal details, could come tomorrow," he wrote on Twitter.

"I think he genuinely loved her," Wolff told the Guardian. "Everyone is wondering what went wrong."

In 1999, the News Corp chairman and CEO married Deng, 44. They had met at a party in Hong Kong two years prior.

When Murdoch was entrenched in the News of the World phone hacking scandal in 2011, Deng defended him by famously punching a man who threw a pie at her husband during a British parliamentary committee.

A source told MailOnline there is not only a pre-nuptial agreement, but also two further "post-nups" in 2002 and 2004. Therefore, the divorce should not affect News Corporation, which is worth $73 billion. The Murdoch family trust controls 38.4 percent of News Corporation’s voting shares. Mrs. Murdoch has no financial stake in the company, according to the New York Times.

Murdoch married Deng 17 days after he divorced his second wife, Anna Maria Torv Murdoch, who he was married to for more than 30 years. Anna Maria Torv got a record settlement of $1.2 billion, the most expensive in history.

Deng and Murdoch were less than two weeks away from celebrating their 14th wedding anniversary.

Anonymous sources close the couple say they have been separated for some time.

"This divorce is no surprise, it's been on the cards for a while. Wendi and Rupert have been living separate lives. She's a New York fixture and is interested in her own career," the source told the Daily Mail.

The pair has two children, Grace, 11, and Chloe, nine. They filed for joint custody.

Ira E. Garr of the law firm Garr Silpe, who has represented Ivana Trump in the past, will represent Murdoch, and Pamela M. Sloan of Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan L.L.P. will represent Deng, 44.
