Poll: Obama Slightly Edging Out Romney In Virginia

Friday, 04 May 2012 10:22 AM

President Barack Obama leads Republican challenger Mitt Romney 51 percent to 44 percent in Virginia, as he maintains the coalition of young, suburban, and women voters that made him the first Democrat to win the Old Dominion in some 40 year in 2008, a new Washington Post poll shows.

Among African Americans, Obama leads Romney 97 percent to 1 percent and among women 56 percent to 38 percent. The president also holds a 2-to-1 lead among those 18 to 29. The president’s signature piece of legislation, his health care law, is a wash in Virginia, with 47 percent approving and 47 percent opposing.

Virginians approve of the president’s performance 53 to 44 percent while 60 percent say they are dissatisfied or angry about the policies of the Republican Congress. Obama draws support from independents and moderates.

The number of Virginians believing the country is on the wrong track is now at 65 percent compared to 83 percent four years ago.

The Post poll surveyed 1,101 people, including 964 registered voters, April 28 to May 2.
