"Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year
, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks," Kraft spokeswoman Jody Moore said in an email statement. "Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue."
The news quickly spread online and caused near pandemonium on Twitter.
But Gawker took the opportunity to poke fun at the situation.
"Reports of a [Velveeta] shortage at a few East Coast grocery stores prompted the magazine to aggressively investigate this matter of utmost public importance, considering the fact that the majority of Americans are unable to make any dip recipes other than 'Velveeta and a jar of salsa, in the microwave' for their upcoming Super Bowl parties," Gawker's Hamilton Nolan wrote.
