By Megan Anderle   |   Wednesday, 12 Dec 2012 12:31 PM

The world took to Twitter and other social media web sites soon after North Korea’s missile launch early Wednesday morning.

Users expressed a range of emotions towards the isolated country, from anger for ignoring sanctions from the United Nations, to fear about the possibility of the country developing more nuclear weaponry, to some real snark about the backwards country.

Reuters reports that the missile overflew the Japanese island of Okinawa. Both South Korea and Japan called meetings of their top security councils after the launch. Japanese television station NHK said the second stage of the rocket had crashed into seas off the Philippines as planned. It was not immediately clear if the third stage carrying the satellite had made it into space.

Critics are calling the missile launch a disguised ballistic missile test, and experts consider this to be a political attempt for new leader Kim Jong-un to establish his credibility and strengthen his hold over the country.

Read on to find out what people from around the world think about the launch.

Many Twitter users blasted the country and the missile launch.

Several users tweeted sarcastic or tongue-in-cheek remarks about the event.

Others used sarcasm to express frustration, as this user did, implying criticism towards the United Nations’ approach to handling the situation.
