The family of Tamerlan Tsarnaev's wife said the suspected Boston Marathon bomber lived a sickening double life, releasing a statement that they never really knew the alleged murderer.

"Our daughter has lost her husband today, the father of her child. We cannot begin to comprehend how this horrible tragedy occurred," Katherine Russell's family said of Tsarnaev, who was killed early Friday after a police shootout. "In the aftermath of the Patriots' Day horror we know that we never really knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Our hearts are sickened by the knowledge of the horror he has inflicted."

Department of Homeland Security agents escorted a car containing two women, one of them covering her face from photographers, into the garage of the Russell family’s North Kingstown, R.I., home on Friday, according to the New York Daily News. One of the women was believed to be Katherine Russell, 24, who apparently converted to Islam for her husband.

Tsarnaev, 26, was seen regularly at the home in the past, taking walks with his wife and their child on weekends, neighbors told the newspaper. It was not clear, however, whether they had been living together.

Tsarnaev and his younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, were ethnic Chechens who came to the United States from Kyrgyzstanand. Tsarnaev never became a U.S. citizen, while Dzhokhar became one last year.

Media outlets have reported that the elder Tsarnaev brother, who was an amateur boxer with Olympic aspirations, cultivated radical Islamic views in recent years. He died after an intense shootout with cops Thursday night, in which a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer was killed.

The Tsarnaev is suspected in that slaying, and the two are accused of setting off two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday that killed three and injured more than 180.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured Friday night in Watertown, Mass., after a weeklong hunt in which the city was entirely shut down and officers went door-to-door searching for the Russian native.

Katherine Russell’s mother, Judith, has pleaded for privacy following Tsarnaev’s death, according to the Daily News. When asked how she was doing, she told reporters, "Basically, he’s dead and we have to deal with it."
