'Sweet Caroline,' Neil Diamond Biggest Hits of MLB All-Star Game (Video)

Wednesday, 17 Jul 2013 01:00 PM

By Alexandra Ward

Even though "Sweet Caroline" is known as the Boston Red Sox anthem, the song brought everyone at the MLB All-Star Game together Tuesday night when Neil Diamond himself performed it live on the field.

Diamond belted out the tune during the middle of the eighth inning of the All-Star Game at the Mets' Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y.

Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox, began broadcasting the song during all its home games in 2002, but since the Boston Marathon bombings in April, baseball stadiums around the country have been playing it as a showing of solidarity to the victims.

Diamond, a 72-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y., native, released "Sweet Caroline" in 1969. The song was inspired by the name of President Kennedy's daughter, Caroline.

His All-Star Game performance sparked a flurry of reactions on Twitter.

The American League won Tuesday night's All-Star game 3-0 over the National League.
