The release fulfills Microsoft's October 2013 promise to provide power covers for the second version of its tablet line in early 2014.
The store listing originally said that the new accessory weighs 0.55 lbs and has a thickness of 9.75 mm. However, ZDNet confirmed that the listing was incorrect. The device actually weighs 1.2 lbs, and it might be twice as thick as originally listed.
A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment on the exact capacity of the new battery, but the store listing claims to extend the battery life of a Surface "up to 70 percent."
Examiner reported that the new CPU in the Surface Pro 2
"was seen as adding significant battery improvements over the original model," and the Power Covers will turn the device into a "full-day workstation."
In the past, Microsoft had trouble keeping tablets and accessories in stock, releasing a docking station in limited quantities
The Surface Power Cover will be available first in the U.S., Canada, and Japan.
