A stray bullet killed a 14-year-old girl Saturday evening while she was boarding a public bus in New York City after a Sweet 16 party, police said.

It appeared the gunman intentionally fired at her Q6 bus from the sidewalk, though it was unclear why, and police do not think the young teen, Daja Robinson, was the target.

"The events are being aggressively investigated. Certainly a possibility of some gang involvement here. But one thing is clear, she was not, in our judgment, a target of the shooting," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Robinson was struck in the head at least once was struck at least at about 9 p.m., and was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens, where she was pronounced dead, according to NY1.com.

Cops are searching for the shooter, who ran away after spraying bullets at the Q6 bus in front of 125-30 Sutphin Boulevard in South Jamaica. The bus was stopped while heading north on Sutphin Boulevard near 125th Avenue in Jamaica.

Police told NY1 they had a tentative description of the shooter as a man aged 18 to 25, wearing a black sweater with a beige- or cream-colored sweater underneath. So far, no arrests have been made.

A detective at the scene said about 10 shots were fired.

Family members told the New York Post Robinson was reportedly leaving a friend’s Sweet 16 party at the nearby Onyx Lounge. A source said the gunman targeted a small group of girls who were boarding the bus. Police said it was unclear what the motive was.

"She's a very bubbly girl. She's nice, nice personality. She did not deserve this," said Nikita Ingram, Robinson's friend.

South Jamaica residents waiting for the bus on Sutphin Boulevard were shocked to hear the news.

"It was like senseless, because you got a lot of people out here who don't know the value of life and they'll take it like it's no big thing," one resident told NY1.
