A number of celebrities have signed a letter to President Barack Obama from the Sierra Club encouraging him to seek an extreme approach that phases out fossil fuels in America.
Stars like Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Woody Harrelson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Edward Norton, Adam Levine, and Morgan Freeman signed the letter, which was published in a full-page ad in The Hill
“Your legacy as 44th president of the United States rests firmly on your leadership on climate disruption,” the letter said. “Only the president has the power to lead an effort on the scale and with the urgency we need to phase out fossil fuels and lead America, and the world, in a clean energy revolution.”
The ad preceded a scheduled demonstration on Feb. 17 called ForwardOnClimate, which 350.org and the Hip Hop Caucus is co-sponsoring.
ForwardOnClimate organizers said they are planning the largest global warming event yet.
For the first time since The Sierra Club’s inception more than a century ago, the group’s board has approved the strategy of civil disobedience to achieve its objectives.
“For civil disobedience to be justified, something must be so wrong that it compels the strongest defensible protest,” Michael Brune, Sierra Club executive director, indicated in a statement. “We are watching a global crisis unfold before our eyes, and to stand aside and let it happen — even though we know how to stop it — would be unconscionable. As the president said in his inaugural address, ‘to do so would betray our children and future generations.’”
