A rogue squirrel is being blamed for causing over $300,000 in damages to a new community center in eastern Indiana. The rodent destroyed electrical equipment with a suicidal power surge.
The project, a $2 million transformation of the former McMillen Ice Arena into a community center with basketball courts, a track, and other amenities, was set to open June 7, and construction crews are now racing to fix the damage to meet that deadline, reports The Journal Gazette
According to Parks Department officials, the squirrel got into the electrical system and caused an enormous power surge, overloading and frying three new HVAC systems and parts of the boiler system.

Unfortunately, the squirrel did not survive the incident.
Al Moll, Parks Director, said the damage will be covered by insurance, but will ultimately cost the project a $50,000 deductible.
Over the last 12 months many squirrels have made the news for causing mischief.
A Tennessee cop was fired in October after pepper spraying and shooting a squirrel
that got loose in a Dollar General store.
When the pepper spray failed to take down the squirrel, Officer Jody Putnam took out his gun and fired multiple shots to kill the squirrel. In the process, many patrons were seen standing outside the store, coughing and hacking because of the second-hand pepper spray fumes.
Just a few months before the dollar store incident, another squirrel shut down a campground in Los Angeles after it was discovered to have the Black Death plague
. The plague killed millions in Europe during the middle centuries, but can now be treated with antibiotics.
