Despite having sharply criticized the president for his past mishandling of the BP oil spill, movie director Spike Lee is set to host a President Barack Obama re-election fundraiser.

According to the New York Post, Lee’s posh Upper East Side brownstone in Manhattan will be the site of an intimate gathering that is designed to help enlarge Obama’s campaign war chest.

Lee and his wife Tonya will welcome a small group of guests who will reportedly pay $38,500 per person or $71,600 per couple to have the privilege of dining with the president.

The Hollywood couple indicated that the event would consist of “no more than six tables and 60 people,” according to the newspaper.

Back in June of 2011, when Lee was asked about Obama's re-election prospects he predicted that the president would likely encounter some difficulty.

“It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be a fight,” Lee said.

Although the director was an ardent supporter of Obama’s 2008 bid for president, Lee took him to task in August 2010 for the way he handled the BP oil debacle in the Gulf of Mexico.

“I don't know why Obama ever trusted these BP guys! They would lie to their mothers," Lee told GQ.

“The thing we don't talk about is that 11 Americans lost their lives and it took seven weeks to invite their families to the White House. I'm not trying to bash my man, but that's a long time,” Lee added.

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker also came up with an additional justification for the Obama administration’s sluggish response to the BP incident. He blamed "environmental racism."

"If this oil spill would have reached the Hamptons, Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, that [bleep] would have been fixed,” Lee said.
