"Saturday Night Live" took aim at the recent bipartisan gun control compromise reached by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin and Republican Sen. Patrick Toomey, mocking the bill as ineffectual (video below).
"This week, the Senate voted 68-31 to begin debating the idea of discussing gun control," said President Barack Obama, played by Jay Pharoah. "Let me say that again. They've agreed to think about talking about gun control. Amazing."
"Is this bill what we wanted? No," said Manchin, played by Jason Sudeikis. "Is it what the NRA wanted? No. But does it at least help in some small way? No, probably not."

"We are confident that this bill will pass the Senate, and it will then go to the House of Representatives, where it will then get immediately shot down," said Toomey, played by Bill Hader.
"And that is not a metaphor. No, they will literally throw the bill up in the air and shoot it with a gun," Manchin added.
In reality, Manchin and Toomey reached an agreement Wednesday on a bill to expand background checks to cover all commercial sales
, such as at gun shows and online. Records of the transactions would have to be kept by licensed gun dealers, the same system used currently. Private transactions that are not for profit, such as those between relatives, would be exempt from background checks.
But "SNL" poked fun at the deal and downplayed its significance.
"Most Americans agree that we need stricter background checks. If our bill passes, no individual can purchase a handgun from a private dealer without being asked, 'are you a good person?'" Hader as Toomey said. "Also, we're very proud of this, we were able to ban AK-47s from all coin-operated vending machines. And the Papa John's promotion 'buy two medium pizzas get a free gun' has been completely outlawed."
