A smoke bomb that filled a school bus with green smoke sent 11 children to the hospital with breathing issues Tuesday morning.

NBC New York said the smoke bomb was set off as the bus took more than 40 students to the Brooklyn Dreams Charter School Tuesday morning.

Amari Bhola, 11, told NBC that kids in the bus were screaming, “‘Who did this, why would you do this?’ People kept saying they couldn’t breathe that well.”

Amari's mother Linda Bhola told CBS New York that her son had his asthma inhaler with him, so he wasn’t as affected by the smoke as some of the other children.

Linda Bhola said school officials called and told her that there was a situation on the bus.

“I said ‘what situation?’ They said something exploded,” she said. “I said, ‘wow that’s dangerous,’” she told CBS.

Fifteen children in total were harmed by the smoke, all minor injuries except one child who was seriously hurt. Five were treated at the scene.

It was unclear who set off the smoke bomb or if there will be any action taken against him or her, CBS said.

It’s not unusual for smoke bombs to be used for practical jokes. In May, this student posted about a smoke bomb going off in her school:

And authorities were trying to track down who set off a smoke bomb last week after a football win at an Isle of Man game because it damaged the playing field, the Isle of Man Today reported.
