Iowa GOP Rep. Steve King says he believes the country should be prepared for a “showdown on the shutdown,” because Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Barack Obama have been planning for a face-off all along, and Republicans should hold their ground on spending cuts — even if it means the government ceases operations on April 8.

steve, king, shutdown, showdown “It is moving in that direction; when I listen to Speaker [John] Boehner it looks to me like there is some resignation in his voice — it sounds like it,” King told Fox Business Network’s Lou Dobbs Tuesday. “I think Harry Reid has strategized for this since last December, when they passed the CR [continuing resolution] until March 4 — I think the president has been part of that — I think Harry Reid has been the proxy for the president.
“Now the president has said he won’t sign a short-term CR unless there is a long-term agreement,” King continued. “This is coming to a head, and I think we are starting to see the intentions of the people that have been resistant to the idea of proposing a counter proposal to the Republican funding agenda.”
King said he saw a government spending stalemate coming “as far back as last July,” if the GOP won a majority in the House in the 2010 elections.
“We have to hold our ground — and where are we going to hold our ground: We can keep  offering another bill that carries out our spending until the end of the year, or we can accept that the Democrats are saying no to everything that we propose,” he said. “They are determined in my opinion to force this shutdown — and the president’s statement today confirms that to a large degree — so if that’s the case, there will be a showdown on the shutdown.

“We’ve got to hold our ground.”
