Self magazine's editor tweeted an apology Wednesday for a piece in print that made fun of a tutu worn by Monika Allen, a marathon runner and brain cancer survivor.

Editor-in-Chief Lucy Danziger tweeted “@glamrunner apologies from me and @selfmagazine. We applaud you for supporting girls & wish Monika speedy recovery.” In another online apology, she apologized for the magazine’s “inadvertent insensitivity.”

Allen told NBC 7 in San Diego that she was shocked when she saw the way the magazine used the picture of her and her friend, running in their tutus.

Self had emailed and asked permission to use the photo, but offered a vague reference to how it would be used. The magazine ran the image in its “BS Meter” section, which covers "what's legit and what's lame," and said in the caption, “A racing tutu epidemic has struck NYC’S Central Park, and it’s all because people think these froufrou skirts make you run faster. Now, if you told us they made people run away from you faster, maybe we would believe it."

Allen, a brain cancer survivor, runs Glam Runner, an organization that makes and sells the tutus with all monies going to support Girls on the Run, a charity that encourage builds confidence in girls through running.

“The reason we were wearing those outfits is because this was my first marathon running with brain cancer,” Allen told NBC 7. She was in the middle of chemotherapy when the picture was taken.

Danziger offered a more extensive apology on the magazine’s Facebook page, but many did not seem to be appeased by her words.

One woman commented, “The Worlds Most SELFish Magazine.” Another said, “It's in exceptionally poor taste to make fun of people in general. It's somehow worse to make fun of them when they're going on to exercise, better themselves, and/or support a noble cause.”
