Rep. Ben Quayle lost to Rep. David Schweikert on Tuesday in a primary battle of GOP first-term incumbents for Arizona’s newly-drawn Sixth Congressional District.

"This was an inter-family battle," Schweikert, 50, a former Maricopa county treasurer, told supporters at his election night party, according to the Arizona Republic. "I need you to reach out, whether we win or lose, to start the healing."

Quayle, 35, the son of former Vice President Dan Quayle, had been endorsed by Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. He moved to a new home in the new district that was reconfigured to include most of the voters he currently represents, the Times reported.

"We ran a very honorable campaign, and we fought for the right reasons," he said, according to the Republic.

Schweikert was leading by 53 percent to 46 percent with 80 percent of districts reporting.

In other Arizona races, incumbent Rep. Paul Gosar, who Sarah Palin endorsed, defeated State Sen. Ron Gould in the race for Arizona’s Fourth Congressional District. Gosar made a move similar to Quayle, switching to run for re-election in a newly drawn district.

Ron Barber, a Democrat who filled the remainder of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ term in Congress, defeated former state representative Matt Heinz, the Times reported. He will now face Republican retired Air Force colonel Martha McSally, in the new Second Congressional District.
