Michigan legislators Thursday gave final approval to a bill that removes limits on the number and location of charter schools in the state but also tightens transparency and performance requirements for those educational institutions, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to sign the bill, which is likely to lead to the opening of many more of the schools across the state.

The Free Press reported that charter-school advocates had sought the expansion since the late 1990s in the face of strong opposition from traditional public school groups and teacher unions. The opposition argued that creating more charters would pull money and students away from the public-school system.

Dan Quisenberry, president of the Michigan Association of Public School Academies, called the passage of the legislation “a historic moment” for the state.

“It’s a demonstration that we’ve earned our right to some respect,” he said. “We’re no longer viewed as an experiment.”
