Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is clearly building support among voters — he’s tied with or ahead of Mitt Romney in recent national polls. And now the former Pennsylvania senator is seeking to ring up more endorsements in Congress, The Hill reports.

Santorum has the backing of three Pennsylvania congressmen so far, compared to 77 congressional members for the former Massachusetts governor.

“There are a number of members who are now close to coming on board, and we expect these numbers to increase in the coming weeks,” a source close to the campaign told The Hill.

South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, who is neutral in the race, has been impressed by the Santorum surge.

“When this thing first started, not many of us thought Rick would be in contention — he didn’t have the money and didn’t seem to be in a position to move up,” the powerful conservative told The Hill. “Now I think a lot of people might change their minds. He’s certainly shown himself to be increasing effectively as a candidate.”

Pennsylvania Rep. Glenn Thompson, one of the troika backing Santorum, agrees.

“There are probably a lot of people taking a second look,” he told The Hill. The other two supporters are Pennsylvania Reps. Lou Barletta and Tom Marino.
