Hayek reportedly crossed into the westbound lanes of a curvy stretch of Sunset Boulevard and collided with a Toyota Tacoma truck.
KCAL, Los Angeles’ CBS affiliate, identified the passenger as Ian Cuttler,
a Grammy Award-winning art director and photographer, of New York. Cuttler was pronounced dead at the scene having suffered major blunt force trauma.
Hayek, 40, a furniture designer, sustained a cut on his head and several broken ribs. The 20-year-old driver of the truck suffered a broken foot.
Hayek debuted a new line of home furnishings in 2011 called Espacio.
Having grown up in Coatzacoalcos, a small, industrial port city in Veracruz, Mexico, Hayek became interested in local craftsmanship and figuring out the way things worked.
“I was curious about the ability of the Mexicans to find a solution to problems with no tools or resources,” he told Departures magazine at the time
. “I’d take things apart to see how they were made and then try to put them back together.”
Police haven’t said how fast Hayek was driving when the crash occurred. As of Monday, he was being treated at a Los Angeles hospital and no charges had been filed in the case.
Hayek’s sister Salma has starred in movies such as "Desperado," "Frida," "Grown Ups," and was the voice of Kitty Softpaws in “Puss and Boots.”
