The Democratic attack machine is not restricting itself to the Republican presidential candidates, but also has begun to go after potential GOP vice presidential candidate Marco Rubio, the popular freshman senator from Florida. The attacks will broaden going forward, The Hill reports.

The thinking among Democrats is that Mitt Romney will probably win the Republican nomination and choose Rubio as his running mate, according to The Hill.

As for the criticism, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has tried to portray Rubio as out of step with the Hispanic voters who are so attracted to him. Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, also has sought to discredit the Cuban-American Rubio among Hispanic voters.

Democratic operatives are rifling through Rubio’s personal finances and family background, trying to find lines of attack. That kind of skullduggery is generally confined to presidential candidates.

Rubio’s team is preparing for the onslaught, having observed what former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had to face as the GOP vice presidential nominee in 2008.

“Marco’s [Senate] campaign in 2010 couldn’t afford adequate research, so we’re doing it now. We know press are digging into things like his family history and his student loans, and liberal super-PACs like American Bridge are doing opposition [research] dumps,” Alex Conant, Rubio’s spokesman, told The Hill.
