Normally reticent regarding his personal life, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney opens up in a new interview — only to say he doesn’t intend to open up and reveal more about himself on a personal level.
“People would like me to lie down and let it all out,” he told the
Wall Street Journal.
But he vows in the interview “that he won’t be part of the celebrity-style culture often favored by politicians,” the Journal reported on Friday.
“Despite pressure to be more revealing, he says he won’t use his campaign as ‘a way to personalize me like I’m a piece of meat.’”
Romney’s son Tagg tells the Journal: “People today look for celebrity, but Dad is being his authentic self. If this is an ‘American Idol’ election of who can ham it up with the judges the best, it’s an election Dad’s not going to win. But if voters want someone who won’t just feel their pain but do something about it, Dad should be their president.”
In the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, respondents were asked who “would be better when it comes to being easygoing and likeable,” and 58 percent selected President Obama, while just 23 percent chose Romney and 15 percent said the two were equally good.
But when they were asked who would be better at improving the economy, Romney beat out Obama by a margin of 44 percent to 38 percent.
