Mitt Romney's presidential campaign said Tuesday that it has garnered $7.4 million in Internet donations since the candidate named Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate Saturday.

The money came from more than 101,000 donations, meaning each contributor provided about $73.

The campaign’s announcement came in a tweet from press secretary Andrea Saul. “In 72 hours, @mittromney & @paulryanvp raised $7.4 million online with over 101,000 donations,” she wrote.

The Romney camp has been able to utilize big news events to bring home the bacon throughout the campaign, The Hill reports. In June, the campaign said it brought in $4.6 million from more than 47,000 contributors in the 24 hours after the Supreme Court decided to uphold most of the healthcare reform law.

To be sure, the 2008 presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain enjoyed a bigger fundraising bounce from the selection of then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as McCain’s running mate than Romney’s campaign has. McCain took in more than $8.8 million in just 48 hours after announcing that he chose Palin.

Romney is giving President Barack Obama a shellacking on the fundraising front, reaping $101.3 million between the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee in July, compared to $76 million for the Obama camp. That represented the third consecutive month in which Romney outraised his opponent.
