Americans prefer Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney over President Barack Obama when it comes to handling the economy, according to a new poll from USA Today/Gallup.

A majority of 63 percent believe Romney’s background in business, including his work at Bain Capital, would help him make good decisions in dealing with the nation’s economic problems. Meanwhile, only 29 percent think his background would cause him to make bad ones.

That suggests the Obama campaign’s attacks on Romney’s tenure at Bain, the private equity firm he co-founded, aren’t having much effect.

A USA Today story about the poll didn’t include numbers for how Obama is viewed on the economy, and the survey wasn’t released publicly.

More bad news for Obama comes in the fact that 61 percent of respondents say the government is trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses. That's a record high since Gallup began asking the question in 1992.

To be sure, Obama is better liked than Romney by a 2-to-1 margin. And he has a double-digit lead in terms of better understanding the problems Americans face in their daily lives.
