Actor Slams Romney for ‘George Costanza’ Remark

Jason Alexander, best known as one of the key cast members of the mega-hit television sitcom, “Seinfeld,” has been thrust into the GOP presidential primary contest because of a TV reference made at the most recent Republican presidential debate.

Alexander is the actor, who from 1989 to 1998 played George Costanza, Jerry Seinfeld’s best friend sitcom character.

Former Massachusetts governor and GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney invoked the “Seinfeld” character during the Wednesday night Arizona debate.

As Romney was being introduced, the audience broke into applause and the candidate remarked, “As George Costanza would say, ‘When they’re applauding, stop.’”

However, Romney had quoted the incorrect “Seinfeld” character. The sitcom line was actually uttered by Jerry’s character, according to BuzzFeed.

The Costanza reference prompted a response from Alexander. Using his twitter account, the actor wrote, “Thrilled Gov. Romney enjoys my old character. I enjoyed the character he used 2 b 2. If he'd embrace that again, he'd b a great candidate.”

The quote appears to express fondness for the former Massachusetts governor’s more moderate political positions, which he had maintained prior to his decision to seek the office of the presidency.

Alexander supported and stumped for President Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign, and he has been a prominent public supporter of the OneVoice initiative, which is an international grassroots movement seeking a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians.
