Robin Quivers, Howard Stern's longtime sidekick, announced Monday that she had been quietly fighting cancer for more than a year but told Stern listeners that she is now cancer-free.

Quivers shared the news with Stern, who had already known about Stern's cancer treatments, on air during his Sirius XM show.

Until Monday, Quivers had kept her cancer battle private, only telling listeners in May 2012 about a surgery she was having that would keep her out of Stern's studio for an extended period of the time.

"I had a major surgery, a major abdominal surgery, and a mass was removed from my pelvic area and I do have some more recovery to do," Quiver said then, according to the New York Daily News. "But everything seems to be fine."

TMZ said Quivers told the audience Monday that her tumor was about the size of a grapefruit and it took doctors eight hours to remove it during surgery.

While managing to keep her secret, Stern said he was scared for his co-host since 1981, admitting he was "freaking out" about the possibility of not having Quivers by his side, according to TMZ.

"It was just a f—ing crazy thing that came out of left field," Stern said on his show, according to TMZ.com. "Robin means more to me than anything. Seeing her go through this just f—ing tore me up."

Quivers' relationship with Stern goes back to the start of Stern's popularity and he has often mentioned how difficult it would be for him to continue the show without her.

"Doing a show without Robin is like cutting off my left arm," Stern said in May 23, 2012, after Quivers first announced she was having her surgery, according to HollywoodLife.com. "Or my right arm. Or maybe both. She was my backbone, you understand. Where I would lose courage, Robin always had the courage. She always is the brave one. Always the brave one with me. I could go to her, and I could always rely on her."

Sterns said on the show Monday, "I gotta be honest, I thought she was a goner," adding that he still gets chills hearing her story.
