Former Sen. Rick Santorum compared the United States’ fight with Obamacare to Nelson Mandela’s fight with apartheid on "The O’Reilly Factor" Thursday, the day of Mandela’s death.

In a discussion about the challenges the Republican party is facing in the 2014 election and what the party can do to pull together, O’Reilly pointed out that there were dichotomies in Mandela’s life.

“Nelson Mandela, I spent some time in South Africa, he was a Communist, this man,” O’Reilly said on the show. “He was a Communist, but he was a great man. What he did for his people was stunning, the sacrifices that he made. But he was a Communist. But I would never attack Nelson Mandela. I told Bishop Tutu, ‘I disagree with you and Mandela, but I respect you.’ Why can’t you guys in the Republican party bring that to the forum?”

Santorum’s response has drawn ire on the internet in online forums.

“Nelson Mandela stood up against a great injustice, and was willing to pay a huge price for that and that’s the reason he’s mourned today because of that struggle that he performed,” Santorum said. “But you’re right. What he was advocating for was not necessarily the right answer, but he was fighting against some great injustice.

“That would make the argument that we have a great injustice going on right now in this country with an ever-increasing size of government that is taking over and controlling people’s lives,” Santorum told O’Reilly. “Obamacare is front and center in that.”

The Health Care Act must remain the “center focus” of the upcoming election, Santorum said.

On an MSN article, a Wrap reporter wrote, "Before we all go wild in the comments (looking forward to it!), can we agree that whatever the merits of Obamacare, on its worst day it isn't as bad as apartheid?"
