Reddit, the social news site best known for its diverse discussion forums, made headlines this week when a Reddit user posted what appeared to be a murder confession
via a popular Internet meme and then promptly deleted his account.
Late Saturday night, user Naratto posted a thread titled "Finally have the guts to say it."
The post linked to the popular Internet meme Confession Bear — a photo of a sad-looking bear usually with some innocuous confession caption — which read: "My sister had an abusive meth addict boyfriend. I killed him with his own drugs
while he was unconscious and they ruled it as an overdose."
A stream of comments poured in, with Redditors debating whether Naratto was joking or not. Some suggested alerting police, while others asked for more details about the supposed crime.
Naratto responded just once to the hundreds of comments by backpedaling and claiming the post was some sort of joke.
"I posted this wondering what would happen, there is SOME truth behind it, but I'm not saying what was true and what wasn't," Naratto wrote. "If I had a dollar for every time someone took me seriously on the internet, I would be able to retire from today alone. I'm sorry to anyone that I've offended to the point of ruining their lives."
A few intrepid Reddit users tracked down Naratto's real name, date of birth, location, and other personal information and posted it in the thread. Forum moderators subsequently deleted those comments, and soon Naratto's account had disappeared too.
Someone did, in fact, alert the FBI about the apparent Reddit murder confession
, according to the Daily Dot.
Reddit exploded Saturday with another controversial thread. Playing off the site's popular "Ask Me Anything" series, one user hosted an AMA with the title "I am going to kill myself in a few hours. AMA."
