About half of U.S. voters say it’s likely the Syrian government will use chemical weapons against its opponents and a sizable number say the United States should aid the rebels if that were to happen, according to Rasmussen Reports.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of likely voters shows that 49 percent believe it is at least somewhat likely the Syrian government will use chemical weapons against its opponents, including 14 percent who see this action as very likely.

Twenty-four percent don’t see Syria’s government using chemical weapons, with just 4 percent saying it’s not at all likely, and 26 percent undecided.

A total of 45 percent of voters say the United States should provide military assistance to the anti-government rebels if the Syrian government were to use chemical weapons; 24 percent do not think the United States should provide military aid in this scenario; and another 31 percent are not sure.

Despite the latest developments, voter attitudes towards U.S. involvement have changed little from last month, according to the Rasmussen survey.

Just 21 percent believe the United States should get more involved in the crisis, while 54 percent say we should leave the situation alone. Another 25 percent are undecided.

However, support for U.S. intervention is still higher than it was last year, when just 9 percent favored more involvement, according to Rasmussen Reports.
