An FBI agent who installed spyware on his son’s school-provided laptop to keep tabs on what the boy was seeing online helped nab the school’s principal after the computer was returned to the school and later used for child-porn Internet searches.

Thomas Weindl, 67, principal of the Whispering Palms School in Saipan in the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands, was arrested after FBI agent Joseph Auther stumbled across his porn past-time. He has been charged with receipt of child pornography and accessing child pornography with intent to view.

Like many parents who are curious and concerned with what their child is viewing online, Auther installed a monitoring program on his seventh-grader’s laptop. The spyware software eBlaster alerted Authur via email notifications of every email sent, chat joined and site visited and searched by his son, who was unaware of the program.

In April, Auther learned he was being transferred from his Saipan assignment to an FBI office in Denver. The agent had the school laptop “cleaned” by a local computer repair shop which removed the old files and reimaged the hard drive to its original settings, according to Forbes.

He then returned the laptop to Weindl, who happened to be a family friend.

However, despite the removal of the old files, the eBlaster software remained intact on the computer.

About a week after returning the laptop, Auther received an email notification informing that the computer’s current user was performing multiple searches pornographic websites, specifically searches for young Asian girls having sex with older men.

Auther feared it might be Weindl, who was married to a Korean woman and had become stepfather to her 11-year-old daughter. Rather than contacting authorities immediately after receiving the first notification, Arthur questioned Weindl about the searches. He claimed the laptop had been returned to the public school system.

Notifications of similar child-porn searches continued to be received by Auther, who alerted another FBI agent and informed the Mariana Islands’ attorney general, requesting that authorities check in on Weindl’s stepdaughter.

Auther, accompanied by another FBI agent, proceeded to confront Weindl at his school office. The principal admitted to having viewed child porn and claimed to have destroyed and discarded the laptop.

According to the Saipan Tribune, Weindl, who has since been relieved of his position, described his Internet searches as a “morbid . . . inappropriate curiosity.”
