Princess Madeleine, the 31-year-old Swedish royal, is pregnant with her first child with British-born banker Christopher O'Neill, officials announced Tuesday. The child is expected to be born in March.

The couple appears to be wasting no time in starting a family, considering the princess married the 39-year-old O'Neill on June 8 at the Royal Palace chapel in Stockholm.

Princess Madeleine, the younger sister of Crown Princess Victoria, is fourth in line to the Swedish throne.

The news comes just over a month after the British Monarchy celebrated its newest addition with the birth of Prince George of Cambridge, the first child of William and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Princess Madeleine's pregnancy will not curtail her plans this fall, as she works with her mother's nonprofit, the World Childhood Foundation, the palace said on Tuesday.

Sweden has a constitutional monarchy in which the royals primarily serve as figureheads.

King Carl XVI Gustaf is the country's head of state, but his powers are limited to representative and ceremonial duties, the Associated Press reported.

In her early 20s, Madeleine was known as "Sweden's party princess," the New York Post reported, as she frequented high-end nightclubs in Stockholm.

Princess Madeleine and O'Neill met in New York City and were first spotted together at the Central Park Boathouse in January 2011. They announced their engagement the following October.

O'Neill, who was born into wealth in London, England as the son of a banker, holds dual citizenship in America and England. He was offered a royal rank in Sweden but reportedly declined. The royal title would have required him to become a Swedish citizen, the New York Post noted.

When the pair was dating, a source close to the couple told the New York Post that Madeleine "is always happy when she is with him."

"I appreciate Chris for his warmth and his humor," the princess said in an interview with the Daily Mail. "He has a very big heart and he manages to make everyone in his presence feel good. Christopher is a very thoughtful and generous person."

The royal couple still resides in New York City.
