Prince Andrew is the first British Royal to open a Twitter account, and in just one day his follower numbers topped 24,000.
Signed on as @TheDukeofYork, Prince Andrew’s account has just 11 tweets and most talk about his upcoming appearances.
The Twitter account notes that any posts directly from Prince Andrew will be signed with “AY,” and so far that’s just the first one posted Monday that said: “Welcome to my Twitter Account. –AY”

That simple first post got an enthusiastic response from the Twitter world.
The Associated Press reported that some “abusive” tweets
had been sent to Prince Andrew’s account, and when asked about them, a palace spokesperson said “the duke is a champion of free speech.”
The only other almost-Royal on Twitter is Prince Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah the Duchess of York, The Christian Post reported
. She tweets as @SarahTheDuchess and has more than 63,000 followers. So far, she’s not one of the 89 people or organizations Prince Andrew is following.
The British Monarchy does tweet at @BritishMonarchy, primarily relaying “the latest news on Royal events,” the profile said. That site was set up in 2009, according to The Telegraph
, and at the time, the Queen said Royals wouldn’t be tweeting.
