A California teacher who lost her job because she previously starred in pornographic films was denied an appeal to return to the classroom.
Science teacher Stacie Halas, 32, was axed by Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard after students found graphic videos of her on the Internet and downloaded them to their smartphones. School officials fired her in March but Halas hoped to return to the classroom.
Halas performed under the stage name Tiffany Six, and says she only performed on video for about eight months in 2005 when her life fell apart financially. Halas told officials she never performed during the time she was teaching.
A three-judge panel for the state's Commission on Professional Competence unanimously decided to keep Halas out of the classroom due to a lack of moral turpitude. In the decision,
"Although (Halas') pornography career has concluded, the ongoing availability of her pornographic materials on the Internet will continue to impede her from being an effective teacher and respected colleague," wrote Judge Julie Cabos-Owen in the decision.
Cabos-Owen added that Halas had been deceitful about her past.
Halas' lawyer Richard Schwab said she was embarrassed about her past.
"Miss Halas is more than just an individual fighting for her job as a teacher," he said. "I think she's representative of a lot of people who may have a past that may not involve anything illegal or anything that hurts anybody."
The school district's superintendent, Jeff Chancer, said the commission made the right decision.
"Halas' decision to engage in pornography was incompatible with her responsibilities as a role model for students and would present an insurmountable, recurring disruption to our schools should she be allowed to remain as a teacher," Chancer said in a statement.
The principal of the school, Wayne Saddler, said that in the beginning of one pornographic video he viewed, Halas talked about being a teacher,
the Daily Mail reported.
