A massive pentagram discovered in Kazakhstan by satellites – leading to online speculation that the image represents the gates of hell – is actually the remnants of an abandoned Soviet-era summer camp.
"It is the outline of a park made in the form of a star," archaeologist Emma Usmanova told NBC's LiveScience.com.
Located 12 miles west of the Kazakhstan city of Lisakovsk, the pentagram is 1,200 feet in diameter and can clearly be seen from space, along with the surrounding circle that appears well-preserved courtesy of a road and worn-away trees, the New York Daily News reported

According to Usmanova, who has years of experience working in the Lisakovsk area, the star was a popular symbol during the Soviet era and often used throughout Kazakhstan and the surrounding region to decorate building facades, flags and monuments, LiveScience.com reported.
In addition to the abandoned Soviet-era camp, various burial grounds and settlements, some of which date back to the Bronze Age, can be found throughout the area near the pentagram.
As for the suggestion by some online that the site was once used for satanic worship, the falsehood is aided by the fact that viewers, upon zooming into the pentagram, can see two areas of the site highlighted by previous users of Google Maps, one labeled "Adam," and the other "Lucifer."
At least two videos showcasing the Soviet-era pentagram (below) have been uploaded to YouTube, one titled, "Satellite detected a huge devil pentagram in Kazakhstan,"
and the other "WTF! Huge Devil Pentagram in Kazakhstan on Google Maps!"
The comment sections for both videos' features an array of passionate arguments from all types of conspiracy theorists, with some arguing that the Illuminati is behind the camp, while others pointing out the pentagram has nothing to do with Satanism.
"The pentagram is a symbol for Baphomet. Baphomet is associated with Satanism. And the Church of Satan has adopted the inverted pentagram as its symbol as well — Satan IS evil," one YouTube user wrote Saturday, the New York Daily News notes.

"Whats so 'devil' about it? Ancient cultures used this simbol (sic) for luck and protection, long time before anybody heard about satan, devil or lucifer," another user wrote on Sunday.
In its article about the Soviet-era summer camp, LiveScience.com notes that the pentagram is actually "an ancient symbol used by many (non-Satanic) cultures and religious groups. It has been adopted by the Mesopotamians, Pythagoreans (followers of Pythagoras, the ancient Greek mathematician), Christians, Freemasons and Wiccans."
