Sean Penn met with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and used the opportunity to publicly castigate the GOP’s current field of presidential candidates.

Chavez and Penn stood together at Venezuela’s presidential palace as Penn responded to a question about the Republican presidential candidates’ criticisms of Chavez.

The Hollywood actor-activist replied that he doesn't think “the use of those exploitive sort of demonizations will be very beneficial to this crew of candidates.”

“That would be the least amongst their weaknesses,” Penn said. “It's never predictable what can happen in an American election, but we certainly believe at this point that it's becoming increasingly clear to the American people that the policies of the far right are the policies of the rich, and that they are to the exclusion of the middle class and the poor, and that no society has a future on that basis.”

During a speech, which was broadcast on state radio and television, the Venezuelan leader called his political opponent Henrique Capriles a “low-life” and a “pig.”

Chavez added of his rival Capriles, “You have a pig's tail, a pig's ears, and you snort like a pig,” according to AFP.

Penn met with Chavez several times in Venezuela. Chavez recently quipped that he thought the actor would be joining the left-leaning Bolivarian Alliance.
