Hall of Fame basketball star Patrick Ewing is joining the staff of the Charlotte Bobcats as an assistant coach, uniting once again with the team's owner and his former rival, Michael Jordan.

The Bobcats reportedly reached an agreement with Ewing this week that puts him on the coaching staff as associate head coach under Steve Clifford.

Ewing, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, was an 11-time NBA All-Star and the league's Rookie of the Year in 1986.

Before sitting out the 2012-13 season, Ewing had worked eight seasons as an NBA assistant coach under Clifford, including in Orlando (2008-12) and Houston (2003-08).

Ewing interviewed for the Bobcats' head-coaching job in 2012, but ultimately Mike Dunlap was hired.

The move to Charlotte pits Ewing against longtime rival and "Space Jam" costar Jordan. Their history dates back to the '80s when Jordan's North Carolina Tar Heels defeated Ewing's Georgetown Hoyas for the 1982 NCAA title. They both went on to have superstar careers for the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks — well-known NBA rivals.

Ewing and Jordan, both 50, were also teammates on the 1992 USA Olympic "Dream Team" that won gold at the Barcelona Games.

Since Jordan took over the Bobcats franchise in 2010, the team has a 106-206 record — far below their Hall of Fame owner's expectations. They finished 21-61 last season, according to FOX Sports.

Ewing fans are looking forward to his newest gig. "Being a Knicks fan, I was and have always been a Ewing fan," one person posted on Yahoo! Sports. "He is, if not, the best shooting center in the past 20 years… He has been LONG overlooked."
