A student at Parkside High School in Salisbury, Maryland, has been charged with sexual assault and rape of a 15-year-old girl in the school's hallway while their schoolmates attended class nearby.

The Daily Times reports Parkside High School student Jocori Marece Scarborough, 17, of Delmar, Maryland, was arrested and accused of making sexual advances toward the girl before forcing her down a hallway.

She immediately reported the incident to school administrators.

Scarborough is being charged as an adult with eight counts, including first- and second-degree rape, first- and second-degree assault, and kidnapping, the newspaper noted.

Parkside has nearly 1,150 students, and many are wondering how something like this could happen while class is in session.

"How could that go on where a teacher doesn't know?" junior Kelsie Dukes asked The Daily Times.

Wicomico County Superintendent of Schools John Fredericksen called the case "gut-wrenching."

"(No student) should be subjected to the kind of treatment that's alleged to have occurred," Fredericksen told the paper. "This is just horrible. Our children should be safe, our families should be safe, to do their very best."

Four percent of students aged 12-18 reported being victimized at schools nationwide in 2011, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, citing the most recent year available. A fraction of that, 0.1 percent, reported "serious violent victimization," which is defined by the U.S. Justice Department as rape, sexual assault, robbery and aggravated assault.
