Sarah Palin said Tuesday the volatility and fluidity in the race for the Republican nomination could lead to a brokered convention, but there is no chance the GOP establishment “will come to me” if there is not a clear choice to face President Barack Obama. The former Alaska governor has indicated in recent days she would not be against another political run.
“Well, the establishment will never come to me — I know that, you know, for a fact. However a brokered convention — I wouldn’t be afraid of that,” Palin told Fox News’ Sean Hannity. “The electorate shouldn’t be afraid of that. That’s the continuation of a process and competition that perhaps would in the end be very good for our party and good for the cause of defending the republic.
“Sean, if Newt Gingrich wins some of those key southern states, if [Rick] Santorum can win some of the Midwest states and in part of that Rust Belt, and then if [Mitt] Romney wins some of the purple states — more moderate areas — then I can see it lead to a brokered convention without anybody having that majority support within the party,” Palin said. “Perhaps that would be the outcome.”
Hannity noted that part of the reason the race has been so “topsy-turvy” is because Romney has still not won the hearts of the Republican Party’s conservative base and asked Palin whether she felt that his attempts at doing so are leading to any success.
“He is certainly attempting to answer the question about his credentials as a conservative, as all the candidates must do, Sean. Because this general election will be absolutely paramount to the future of America,” Palin said. “However, some people still are not convinced. Look at his numbers: say, there in Michigan where folks are, I believe — according to the numbers as being an indicator, their poll numbers — they are connecting more to Santorum it seems. . . . This blue-collar background of Santorum is boding well for him as opposed to some of what Romney has been saying.”
With next week’s primaries in Arizona and Michigan approaching, Palin said she is still not formally backing any of the candidates and believes the vetting process should continue.
“I don’t know at this point who I would vote for there in Michigan. I do want the process to continue,” she said. “We know that we had a poor process last go around and it’s the fault of the media — the leftist lame-stream media that did not vet Barack Obama, who then obviously became our president, and now we are suffering the negative ramifications of what Barack Obama stands for.
“I want the process to continue — competition makes everybody better,” Palin continued. “It is still sharpening still with these gentlemen who are putting themselves forward in the name of service to our country — it needs to continue.”
