Both men are students at Paine College, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Monday’s shooting was the second at Paine College in 24 hours. Two men fired shots at a men’s residence hall on Sunday, injuring one student, who was hit by debris from a shot through a wall. Investigators believe the two shootings are related, WRDW-TV reported.
Monday’s shooting put Paine College and nearby Georgia Regents University on lockdown.
Officials said the school was safe for students returning to classes on Tuesday.
The suspect’s father, Anthony Cooper, told the AJC
that his son has received threats on his life since January.
He said a group of men threatened Xavier Cooper and his friends because they believed Cooper and his friends were moving in on their drug turf.
“I didn’t even know he had a gun or how he got it,” Anthony Cooper said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “All I know is that he had been protecting himself with a steel pipe.”
According to WRDW-TV, the shooting is believed to have stemmed from an argument between the two students from two weeks ago.
