Olivia Newton-John revealed that just weeks ago she was unable to walk after the breast cancer she overcame in 1992 recurred 25 years later in her spine.

The 68-year-old actress and singer initially thought it was a back injury, she told Australia’s 60 Minutes, Entertainment Tonight reported, but doctors found in May that the cancer had metastasized and invaded her lower spine.

“I need to get through this, I have lots to do,” Newton-John remembered thinking, ET reported. “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t scary. It was, but I felt sure that I would get through.”

Newton-John, who used herbal and photon radiation therapies as well as medical marijuana, said the excruciating pain made going on with life difficult.

“I was trying to do shows and it was pretty agonizing,” she said, ET reported.

The "Grease" star had to postpone her U.S. and Canadian tour in May because of pain so bad she could not walk, but she has begun to recover and regain her function since then.

“I can walk, but I can’t go long distances,” Newton-John said, Metro reported. “But I’ll get there, because I couldn’t walk at all a month or so ago. As I heal I’ll be able to walk more.”

Cancer on the spine can be dangerous because of the risk of paralysis when it is operated on.

Newton-John is raising money for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre and credits the center for helping her recover. In a video, she talked about the center, the campaign, and her fans’ considerable support since she announced the relapse.
