Denny's Surcharge: Obamacare Fee Sparks Flurry of Twitter Response

By William Dennings   |   Thursday, 15 Nov 2012 11:43 AM

John Metz, the owner of 40 Denny’s restaurant franchises and five Hurricane Grill & Wings locations in Florida, has said he will add a 5-percent surcharge to all prices on his menus in order to offset the cost of Obamacare, sending the Twitter world into a tizzy.

To further make up the costs of the Affordable Care Act, which goes into effect fully in January 2014, Metz also said he would slash the hours of his some-1,200 employees to less than 30 hours per work, he told Fox News.com.

“If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices,” Metz told The Huffington Post. “They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare.”

“People are trying to find ways to avoid the penalties and to avoid having to pay for ObamaCare,” told FoxNews.com. “Everyone’s looking for a way to not have to provide insurance for their employees. It’s essentially a huge tax on all us business people.”

People across twitter reacted with a mix of revulsion, support, and expectancy at the news:
