Sen. John McCain challenged President Barack Obama Thursday to run on his record instead of attacking Mitt Romney’s wealth in an effort to portray him as out of touch with most Americans.

“There are so many issues we could address, that the president could address, rather than this class warfare thing,” the Arizona Republican said in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

McCain was referring to a comment Obama made Wednesday during a campaign appearance in Ohio, where he declared: “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.”

The White House denied it was a direct reference to Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. But McCain said it was clearly a shot aimed not only at Romney but all Republicans.

“What Barack Obama is doing right now — President Obama is doing — is running from his record,” McCain said, adding that Obama’s policies have failed to create jobs and get the economy back on track.

McCain specifically noted the president’s claim that passage of his economic stimulus package would reduce the national unemployment rate to 6 percent.

The senator also took a shot at Obamacare to drive his point home that the president is afraid to embrace his own record.

“Over 60 percent of the American people believe not only should it be replaced but it was one of the sleaziest chapters in the history of the United States Senate,” McCain said, referring to the nasty fight in Congress between the president and lawmakers over the healthcare reform program.

“He can’t hide from a record of failure,” McCain continued. “And one of the most effective ways that we can counter this kind of thing that he is doing is . . . repeating his own words.”
